Overcome Your Limiting Beliefs

By Jeremiah Wean

Overcome Limiting Beliefs

Overcoming Limiting Beliefs a hand holding a small view into the WorldEveryone has something that is holding them back from reaching their full potential.  Some obstacle that if you could just get around everything would be better.  Sometimes it just takes someone else to help you see how to get over, under, around, or through the obstacle.  Reminds of the scene from Rocky, Adrian you’ve got gaps, but I’ve got gaps and together we have no gaps.

Tonight I watched Tony Robbins new Show on NBC “Breakthrough with Tony Robbins“.  The premise of the show is he changes peoples lives in 30 days.  The guy on the show tonight was paralyzed on what was to be the happiest night of his life, his wedding night.  He was at the reception and had walked over to the water and was dancing the next thing he new he was floating.  From that point he and his wife lost all of the dreams of their future.  He got to the point where he would just wake up take his pills eat a meal, and wait until the next meal and round of pills.  His wife had to help him with everything.  By the end he saw that he could do things by himself and for himself and his wife realized that she needed to let and make him do things himself.  Check out a preview clip of the show below.

About 12 years ago I had dislocated my shoulders multiple times within a short few moths.  My physical therapist was a quadriplegic.  He had to describe each and every exercise to me in great detail because we was not able to demonstrate or guide me in any other way than through his words.  He had to keep extensive notes on each patients progress most of the other therapists just typed out the notes.  He used Dragon Natural Speaking and had to dictate the notes to the computer along with all punctuation, returns, paragraphs, etc.  He told me that he had always loved physical therapy and he was not going to let his situation dictate what he could and could not do.

When I drop my kids off at daycare there is another dad that paralyzed from the waist down.  He drives his kids to daycare.  When he gets there, he reaches around behind him grabs his wheelchair and unfolds it onto the ground.  He lowers himself into the wheelchair and wheels around to grab both kids and takes them in.  He’s overcome the obstacles.

In College at Indiana University I did Dance Marathon to Benefit Riley’s Children Hospital.  The Dance Marathon is a 36 Hour Dance-a-thon, no one i allowed to leave, or sleep, with just limited breaks.  It starts on a Friday night.  So, to add to the 36 hours, you’ve also been up since early Friday morning.  The last 5 hours it is very tough to stay awake  That’s when they bring in a bunch of the kids from Riley’s Children Hospital.  These are kids that are going through Chemotherapy, or have Leukemia and other ailments, yet they are so full of joy.  You realize that if they can find joy in this difficult time for them you have not right to be tired, or to even think about your problems.  It was great to seem them overcome.

The show reminds me of an old Parable of a Farmer and a Donkey:

Step It Up and Shake It Off

A parable is told of a farmer who owned an old mule. The mule fell into the farmer’s well. The farmer heard the mule ‘braying’ -- or -- whatever mules do when they fall into wells. After carefully assessing the situation, the farmer sympathized with the mule, but decided that neither the mule nor the well was worth the trouble of saving. Instead, he called his neighbors together and told them what had happened…and enlisted them to help haul dirt to bury the old mule in the well and put him out of his misery.

Initially, the old mule was hysterical! But as the farmer and his neighbors continued shoveling and the dirt hit his back…a thought struck him. It suddenly dawned on him that every time a shovel load of dirt landed on his back…HE SHOULD SHAKE IT OFF AND STEP UP! This he did, blow after blow.

“Shake it off and step up…shake it off and step up…shake it off and step up!” he repeated to encourage himself. No matter how painful the blows, or distressing the situation seemed the old mule fought “panic” and just kept right on SHAKING IT OFF AND STEPPING UP!

You’re right! It wasn’t long before the old mule, battered and exhausted, STEPPED TRIUMPHANTLY OVER THE WALL OF THAT WELL! What seemed like it would bury him, actually blessed him…all because of the manner in which he handled his adversity.

THAT’S LIFE! If we face our problems and respond to them positively, and refuse to give in to panic, bitterness, or self-pity…THE ADVERSITIES THAT COME ALONG TO BURY US USUALLY HAVE WITHIN THEM THE POTENTIAL TO BENEFIT AND BLESS US! Remember that FORGIVENESS--FAITH--PRAYER-- PRAISE and HOPE…all are excellent ways to “SHAKE IT OFF AND STEP UP” out of the wells in which we find ourselves!

Bill Phillips, previous owner of EAS had a fitness challenge where he challenged people to transform there body’s in 12 weeks.  During the 12 Weeks the winners usually found that not only had they transformed their bodies but they transformed their lives as well.  One of the biggest take aways I had was that time will never be right.  There will always be obstacles.  If you wait for the right time you will never get started.  You must take the first step.  Begin.

The Story is not where you start.  It’s Where you Take it.

  3. Hi Jeremiah. Thank you for this great post. I would like to introduce you to my son Matthew Slaydon, who was blinded and lost his left (work) arm in Iraq. He has persevered and will soon be returning to college to earn a degree in psychology to work with trauma victims. You can read about him on my blog. He and these people you speak of are all our teachers and we owe them a debt of gratitude.

  4. So many of us take things for granted and complain about the smallest of obstacles that get in our way. When you read posts like yours, or see a show like Tony's, it makes you realize that most of the challenges we face are simply foolish excuses we let build up and the only thing getting in the way of a success, love, and dreams is ourselves.

“The Breakthrough with Tony Robbins” is coming on at such a perfect time for the world. We are in a global recession, people are struggling, and the excuses are piling up. This show WILL make a difference for a lot of people, and I have not been this excited to watch network TV in a really long time.

Here is my quote of the day: “Failure is not an option. It is a privilege reserved only for those who try”

What a motivational week this has already been! Thank you for writing and sharing this great post Jeremiah.

Now let's go out there, stop hiding behind excuses and make great things happen today. Not only for ourselves, but for all of those around us too!

    LOVE IT!

  5. @Harrison – You are so right. There are so many people that don't use all their own potential. The show was great.

@Carolyn – I'm sure it was a traumatic experience for everyone. Glad to hear that he overcome and will put his experience to great use. There is definitely a lot to learn from those that have overcome great tragedies.

    Hi Jeremiah,

What a terrific blog post! I'm so happy to have stopped by to read it. Regrettably I missed Tony's show last night and I meant to watch it. He is very inspiring, as is your post here. The Dance Marathon story was tremendous. I can imagine being so exhausted and then seeing the children. It must have quite an experience. Everyone does have something that holds them back but to see something like this, or Tony's show (probably) sheds light on how small our problems are and how easily we should be able to overcome them, particularly in comparison with others.

Appreciate your stories and giving us the reminder!

  10. Deb,

Thank you for the wonderful comment. Dance Marathon was definitely an experience. I look forward to the show, on Tuesday at 8pm EST.

  11. Jeremiah,
Great post. I saw the show and found it pretty inspiring as well. I felt a little mixed, as don't want people to get the impression they need to fly to Fiji and jump out of a helicopter to move on with their lives, yet the couple was quite fortunate to be blessed with those resources at that time. And loved your story of the mule. I've heard it before, but I never get tired of hearing it.
    Thanks so much,
    Adam

  12. I watched some of Tony Robbins show. It was great to see the improvements for that couple. That story reminded me of my grandmother, who always told me, that reasons for not doing something, were nothing more than excuses to get out of a commitment. They were never a hindrance when you wanted something bad enough. So, she told me to make sure I wanted it bad enough, since she expected me to get it done that day.

I know this is highly off topic, but funding for Guaranteed USDA home loans is back. HR 4899 was signed by the President. The lender fee goes up from 2% to 3.5% and the lender can charge a 0.5% fee (essentially mortgage insurance without being called that) on the outstanding principal for the life of the loan. $697 Million has been allocated through the end of the fiscal year (September 30, 2010). I know many people have been waiting to close, but haven't been able to due to a lack of funding. Also, many people have been waiting to place offers, but haven't been able to, until now. Hopefully the funds will may their way down to the local level soon.

  14. Dr. Adam,

Definitely agree with what you're saying. I think they did there best to enforce that you can overcome yourself you don't need someone else to start accomplishing.

I really like the farmer & the mule – I've used it a few time in speaches.

    Jeremiah…

  15. Your grandmother really had a great attitude, I'm sure that has helped you along the way to excel when others just see defeat. They can't stop us, just slow us done.

  17. Brian,

Every once in awhile I decide to write something off the subject of USDA Home Loans. I was planning on writing a post about it today.

It is great news to have everything finalized. We never took time off from closing USDA loans, our investors have been closing with the conditional commitments. I don't know if the lenders that pulled out when funds dried up will be in a rush to get back into the market. I think must have a bigger focus on getting FHA out to the masses.

Stop back tomorrow, and I should have the post about the great news for USDA.

Hope the St. Louis Market is treating you well.

    Jeremiah…

  18. I have attracted so many limiting beliefs articles to me this week including one I wrote a couple of days ago in which I had a major breakthrough. We got to spend time with Oz Sanchez a paraplegic that won the gold medal in the wheelchair event in the Olympics at Beijing. What he had to overcome was incredible and made me feel that anything is possible to overcome.

    Jeremiah,
You have certainly chosen two of the best people to remind us that we are so much more than our limiting beliefs. Tony Robbins is my positive thinking guru and Nick Vijusic – there is not much one can say about his ability to overcome limiting beliefs and enjoy life, despite obstacles that would certainly do most of us in. Thanks for sharing these – and congratulations on your TSA syndication win.
    Erica

  20. Michael,

That is amazing. I'm sure Oz had a lot of energy around him. It really is, we just have to believe.

    Thanks for stopping by.

  21. Erica,

It really is amazing. Tony really has a way to frame things to help people move forward. Thanks for the congrats, I still have one more week to go to get the top spot.

    Hi Jeremiah,

It's interesting what some people think of as a huge obstacle while others see it as merely a bump in the road. And what some people find to be a mundane task actually makes others proud to do, it just goes to show the mental limitations that we can put on ourselves. The mind is a powerful thing.

    Cheers, Lynn

    Hi Jeremiah,

Tony Robbins certainly has an insight on health, wealth and happiness. Below is my favorite quote from this article:

Go out and make it a great day!

  24. Lynn,

Thanks for the comment. It really is amazing the “power of positive attitude”.

  25. Lloyd,

Thanks for the wonderful words from Tony Robbins. Sometimes it's hard to do, but when we put our sights to it, we really can accomplish great things.

  26. John Paul says:

Awesome post… it is so tru that we are what we want to be. How many times people have let their negative thoughts stop them from being or doing what they want.

Then you see someone with a disability that is living and conquering life like you wish you could.

People need to step outside themselves and see they can do anything they want.

Like the story I read this week, 73 yr old guy did his first REAL MMA sanctioned fight.. 73 yrs old..lol that is Awesome.

  27. Curt Bizelli says:

Thanks for sharing. Do you know when the next Breakthrough airing will be on? I looked on yahoo tv and it couldn't find any listings for the next 14 days. Anyway, thanks for such a positive message. God Bless from TSA, Curt

  28. Hi Jeremiah,

Thanks for sharing an inspiring post. I agree, the only thing that keeps us from reaching our goals is our own limiting beliefs! If we believe in ourselves and our goals, anything is possible!

    Hi Jeremiah.

What a great way to start the week. Thank you for the inspiration on two counts. I wasn't even aware that Tony Robbins had a show going so will definitely check that out. It is interesting how easily we can lose perspective when it comes to our obstacles. Thanks for reminding us of that.

  30. Curt the next “Breakthrough” is on tonight, Tuesday, 8pm EST on NBC.

  31. John,

It really is amazing what people can accomplish when they put their minds to it. But also, how far someone can let themselves go, if they don't keep working on achieving daily.

I'll have to look for the story on the 73 in MMA fight.

    Thanks for stopping by.

  32. MaryKay,

It really is true. Someething that really helps is to have those dreams and goals in front of us to review on a daily basis.

  33. Linnea,

I'm glad you enjoyed. It really is a great message, that we can all achieve what we set out to, even if at first we get set back.

  34. Curt Bizelli says:

Thanks Jeremiah. I'm going to check it out online the next chance I get.
Somebody gave me a URL where you can watch the full thing.

  35. Great post Jeremiah. When you have a strong desire, a clear vision of that desire and an ACTION plan you can accomplish anything. With that you can overcome any limiting beliefs. Not to mention that the more you practice something the easier it becomes.

    Thank so much for sharing.

  36. Chris,

Thank you for sharing. You said it best, “the only thing limiting us, is ourselves.”

  37. Chris Hughes says:

Hey Jeremiah, it's my first time being on your blog here and I'm so glad I found you through the TSA.

That video of Nick has gotten me so pumped up and excited about the opportunities I have each day to better myself. I wasn't aware of the fact that during those long dance-a-thons that they had brought the children in to help everyone get through the tough times. That's a really great way to get energy back and a way of helping everyone get through the toughest times.

Some of my limiting beliefs have been based on the fact that I was “too young” to do big things that I dream about. This has caused me to push back a lot of the progress in my business because I felt I wasn't qualified to be an expert because of my age. The only true limiting beliefs are the ones that we choose to believe in and you've proven here that anything can be accomplished once we overcome these limiting beliefs.

    Keep up the great work,
